WORDS: HANNAH PHILLIPS
2010 was your fourth year at T in the Park. Why do you keep going back?
Because it’s T in the Park! Every time we’ve gone, the number of people have increased. We’ve been going since we were young, so it’s a big day for us.
What’s better: festival or touring?
Well, when you’re doing the festivals it’s like you’re touring because you’re going from one festival to the next one. Festivals are good because all the other bands are there.
Are there ever any arguments in the band?
Yeah. It’s just about stupid stuff about who stole the last beer and turning up late. That’s just what happens!
Your second album ‘Which Bitch?’ … is it aimed at any girl in particular?
No, it’s not really a girl in particular. It’s just like ‘which bitch’, it just clicked as soon as we said it. It started out as being funny and then we thought it was quite good, so it stuck!
What can we expect from The View’s third album?
It’s a lot more musical. There’s a lot of harmony on it and we’re bringing in a bit of piano and orchestra. It’s pretty cool – we’ve got some gospel singers on there too.
Did your school, St. Johns, encourage your musical ambitions?
School was where we really got into The Beatles and that’s where we started playing guitars and just kept on going. We just played as a cupboard band and thought that was as far as it was going to go, but we actually managed to get pretty good!
Do you think it is important for schools to encourage creativity in areas such as music?
Definitely. We got to do projects in English about The Beatles which made us want to do more solo talks because you’re writing and talking about something you actually like.
You were involved in the school talent show four times …
Yeah, we won it three times.
Who managed to beat you that other time?
Irish dancers.
What advice would you give to young people trying to break into the music industry?
Keep at it. Even if you’re in a band, but you’re not actually a song writer, you should still try to write songs anyway because your perception of something could always be different from someone else’s. Even if you don’t think it is that great you could connect with someone else who will make it sound a lot better. Some people shove their ambitions to the side because they don’t think they’re good enough but you could meet that special person who could be your song-writing partner and really help you along the way.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Probably doing T in the Park and Glastonbury. That’s the most people we’ve ever played for. At T in the Park it was 30,000. And with Mark Ronson we played at the Lovebox festival and that was to about 30,000 as well.
Who else would you like to work with?
I’d love to work with The Chemical Brothers and Amy Winehouse – I think she’s a great singer, and it would be good if we were able to sing together.
What does the band have in view for the future?
We’ll be touring soon – we’ll have all the details out soon. And we’re doing the final mixes of the record.
