MEMBERS: Colin McArdle, Kev Sherry, Jamie Houston , Tim Davidson, Noel O’Donnell
FROM: Glasgow
SOUND: Indie Pop

SO, HOW DID YOU GET TOGETHER?
Colin: Well, me and Kev went to university together. We didn’t really know each other that well but once we left, we found ourselves hanging around and playing together a little bit.
Kev: Because we couldn’t get proper jobs!
Colin: Rubbish! Rubbish! Anyway, Kev knew Jamie through a mutual friend, we got him on board and then saw Noel at a few parties. After we had been gigging for a wee bit Tim came over and asked to join so we thought: “Yeah, fair enough!”

WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
Colin: From practicing up in the attic! It was all fairy lights and candle lights everywhere with pictures and curtains, it was like a wee recording studio.
Kev: I still pine for the days of the attic.

SO, ARE YOU ALL FROM GLASGOW?
Colin: No. Technically, I am actually the only one from Glasgow. Kev is from Bishopbriggs, which we all know is outside Glasgow.
Kev: It’s joined onto Glasgow, there’s no countryside between Bishopbriggs and Glasgow.
Colin: But technically it’s outside Glasgow. Tim is from Newcastle, Noel’s from Mallaig up north and Jamie is from Torrence which is outside Glasgow too. I am from Springburn so I’m really the only Glaswegian!

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE YOU’VE PLAYED IN SO FAR?
Colin: Somerset House in London was good. We played outside in a big courtyard supporting the Fratellis. It was a really big crowd and a really beautiful summer night.

WHO WRITES YOUR SONGS?
Colin: We all pitch in ideas and work on it as a band, which seems to work quite well ‘cause it means that the stuff that does get through tends to be songs we all agree are good.

MET ANY OF YOUR IDOLS YET?
Kev: It’s been good to meet people. I’m a big fan of Echo and the Bunnymen, so it’s been good to meet them. Colin and I are big Van Morrison fans. We didn’t meet him, but we met his best friend!

WHAT RESPONSE HAVE YOU GOT TO THE NEW ALBUM?
Kev: We have been well chuffed ‘cause we have pretty much had great reviews all round.

WHO’S SINGLE IN THE BAND AND WHO’S ATTACHED?
Colin: Me and Kev are the two single boys in the band.
Kev: Which is strange ‘cause we are the most dynamic and handsome!
Colin: We don’t meet the right girls. Where are all the good girls?

Friday Night Lights
Fans of Snow Patrol and Glasvegas will not go wrong if they buy this album. With a vibey, pop/rock ballad sound, and without the oft-annoying broad Glaswegian accent of previous bands to emerge from the city, Attic Lights’ debut album is a feel-good mix of songs which encompasses many different sounds, while still remaining true to its indie origins.

These range from the upbeat Never Get Sick of the Sea which kicks the album into life with a catchy rhythm guaranteed to have you singing along, to Wendy, the new single, which is a calm ballad with soulful vocals, just begging for a crowd swaying with their lighters in a live performance, to Winter On, the tenth and final song which ends the album on a slow, sad note, with many variations in between.

Of particular note is Late Night Sunshine, a rock ballad with a pop twist and happy lyrics – just what you need to cheer you up on a cold autumnal day, and Walkie Talkie, a pop song with undertones of rock and a catchy “Ba ba bada” refrain to which you’ll soon be singing along!

To sum up: Friday Night Lights is an impressive debut album, and I hope that we’ll be seeing great things from Attic Lights in the near future!
